The Stringed Crane Conservatory is very pleased to invite you to join us among the enchanting and enigmatic succulents of the Nonhuman Teachers Greenhouse for a special vocal workshop with multidisciplinary musician, choir leader, and yodeling queen of Berlin, Kutzkelina.
We are thrilled for Kutzkelina to join us once again as a guide in exploring the human voice as a contemporary instrument of resonance, transformation and connection.
Drawing from her artistic research in Japan, Western Europe, North Sweden and Belarus, this workshop moves between the meditative vocal traditions of Japanese Buddhist Shōmyō, European yodeling practices, and experimental vocal techniques. Appreciating each of these traditional vocal forms as living technologies of the body, participants may discover how traditional knowledge can inform our experience of voice and expressive vocal practice.
This workshop combines vocal technique, somatic practice, therapeutic voice work, improvisation and collective composition to create an open environment where technical precision and playful exploration coexist; where the voice can become a meeting place between ritual and experimentation, individual expression and collective sound.

Kutzkelina is a multidisciplinary musician, composer, and actress based in Berlin. From her early childhood growing up in the dark forests of the Harz Mountains in the GDR, she has been singing and yodeling, as well as composing for a wide variety of musical projects that center around the voice. She founded Jodelschule Kreuzberg (Kreuzberg Yodel School) in Berlin, and travels worldwide teaching, as well as studying, yodeling and advanced vocal techniques, with a focus on the breaking of the voice in traditional music.
Nonhuman Teachers takes a new approach to ecological storytelling, blending science, art, and the imagination to help deepen the relationship between humans and the natural world. Through multidisciplinary public programming, immersive botanical spaces, and new nature media, it aims to ignite a sense of wonder about our rapidly changing Earth, not only to make us better citizens of this place but to help us imagine it differently. Nonhuman Teachers' multidisciplinary events in LA and NYC include lectures, workshops, book and plant clubs, movie screenings, and all kinds of performances.
